Lucky 13

August 13th, 2010 | by Oh, Brother!
Posted In: blog posts

Today is Friday the 13th! “What’s the big deal?,” some people may say. Well, there are people who are superstitious and believe that when the thirteenth day of a month falls on a Friday, it is a day of bad luck.

Are you superstitious? Do you get the willies if a black cat crosses your path? Will you not step on a crack because you are afraid it might break your mother’s back? I won’t open an umbrella indoors, and I have accidentally broken a mirror and thought to myself, Rats! Am I going to get seven years of bad luck now?”

Share some of your silliest superstitions with us. There might be some we have never heard of!

Rough Game!

I’d like to share the rough pencil version of today’s strip with you. As originally drawn, it wasn’t clear in panel three that the ball had actually hit Lily, so I redrew it for the final.

Dodge Tag and Freeze Ball!

August 12th, 2010 | by Bob

I remember when I was a kid, playing cards with my friend from down the block.
He was a fast talker and a sore loser. Whenever it looked like I was about to
win, he would suddenly change the rules. He did this over and over until HE won
the game! Bud reminds me of my old friend in today’s comic!

If you had to choose  between playing freeze tag and dodgeball, which game would
you  choose? Pretending to be a statue frozen  with a funny face? Jumping out of
the way of a fast, rubber ball? It’s not  an easy choice to make. Both are a lot
of fun to play! We would have  to pick dodgeball because the rules of
play include a lot of dodging, ducking, dipping and  diving!

Lions, tigers and bears … oh my!

August 11th, 2010 | by Bob

Bud and Lily are visiting the zoo today, and Bud accidentally wakes up a sleeping lion! We don’t like being woke up from a sound sleep either!

When I was five years old my father took me to the Bronx zoo. We walked into a long indoor enclosure that housed the big cats. As we stood in front of one of the cages, a huge lion, that looked monstrous to me,  let out the loudest, most blood-curdling roar you can imagine! My father recalls how I tore away from him, and ran from the building, terrified and screaming!

Do you have a special zoo story? Do you love going to the zoo? What is your favorite part of the zoo? Is it the monkey house? Maybe it is the polar bear den, or the sea lion pool … or maybe like me, it’s the snack shop?! There are so many cool animals and exhibits at the zoo. It’s really hard to pick just one! Tell me what your love most about the zoo and why.

Too hot!

August 10th, 2010 | by Oh, Brother!

Boy, it’s been one hot summer!  It’s hard to keep cool when it’s so hot out.  Today, it’s supposed to reach 86ºF (30ºC) where Jay lives and a whopping 100ºF (38ºC) where Bob lives!  What are some of the ways that you keep cool in the summertime? Do you drink lots of water, or make paper fans?  How about sticking ice in your socks?

Poor Bud can’t fill his swimming pool.  If only he had some help!  There are lots of jobs that are easier when we have someone to help us.  Are there tasks you enjoy more when you have somebody helping you out?

Early ‘Oh, Brother!’ Sketches

August 9th, 2010 | by Jay Stephens

Thought you might all enjoy a peek at some very early sketches of Lily, Bud, Buster, and, ummm… a turtle. These drawings are from almost 5 years ago when Bob and I first started talking about doing this comic together! You’ll notice the character designs have changed a bit since then. And, yes, the pet turtle will be making an appearance in the daily strips soon!
